We carry your messages. We don’t keep them.

Like WhatsApp and Signal, Burner’s server is a relay: it holds an encrypted message only until every recipient’s phone has it, then deletes it.

  1. Locked on your phoneYour message is encrypted before it leaves your phone. Only the people in the chat hold the keys.
  2. Carried, not readOur relay passes the encrypted message on. It can see who it’s for and when — not what it says.
  3. Unlocked on theirsTheir phone decrypts the message and saves it on the device.
  4. Gone from our serverOnce every recipient has it, the relay deletes its copy. Messages you secure are the one exception.

* Your chats live on your phones. That also means a lost or reset phone can mean lost chats — except messages you secured, which we keep (still encrypted) so they come back. Messages that are never delivered are deleted after 30 days.

  • Secure a messageThe other person can’t delete it without your approval — Burner asks you first. Secured messages are kept, encrypted, so they survive a new phone.

Good to know

Can Burner read my messages?

No. Chat messages are end-to-end encrypted: they’re locked on your phone and unlocked only on the recipients’ phones. Our server only relays the encrypted message and deletes it once it’s delivered. Channels are the exception — they’re public broadcasts, so channel posts are not end-to-end encrypted.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Your chats live on your phone, so a lost or reset phone can mean lost chats. Messages you secured are kept (encrypted) and come back when you sign in with your recovery phrase. Please keep your 12 words somewhere safe.

Does Burner AI send my chats to the cloud?

No. Burner AI, developed by Arc IO, runs completely on your phone. After a one-time download it works without the internet, and it has no web search. What you ask and what it reads stay on the device.

Is Burner Mail end-to-end encrypted?

Email is a global standard, so mail to and from other providers travels as ordinary email. We scan it for viruses and dangerous attachments, keep it on our mail server only until your phone fetches it, and never read it for ads.

Do I need a phone number?

No. You sign up with a username and password. Verifying a phone number is optional — it’s only needed to create a public channel.

When is Burner coming to iPhone?

Soon. Burner is available on Android through Google Play today, and the iPhone app is on its way.
